Callahan Piano Service

On Wednesday, October 17, fourteen freshmen from Orinda Academy paid a visit to Callahan Piano Service, the restoration shop recently featured in the award-winning documentary Miracle in a Box. Proprietor John Callahan outlined the basics of a piano's structure as he explained the painstaking detail of piano restoration. Students learned that the piano is actually a percussion instrument as they witnessed a tuning demonstration and part of the construction of a new action for an old piano. After learning that the 88 keys of a piano involve around 230 strings, a few brave students played the Steinway pianos currently in the shop. Peter and Zarrah played the 1917 piano, and Christopher tried but the 1927 model, pronouncing it "way nicer than my piano." Students also watched as a piano was being wrapped and readied to be shipped to Hawaii after a year of restoration.
